The Hayes Collection is comprised of photographs by James Dennis "Denny" Hayes and his two sons, Durwood and Johnny who contracted with the Dallas Times Herald for news photograph services. Denny Hayes was a chief photographer for the Dallas Times Herald and later operated a commercial photography business that his sons took over after his semiretirement in the 1950s. The photographs in this collection come from Denny's work at the Dallas Times Herald and from his and his sons' work in commercial photography. The majority of the photographs were taken from the 1930s to the 1960s. Subjects include State fairs (1929-1954); Texas Centennial architecture; mayors and civic officials; street scenes; Love Field and aviation; parades; sports; society; public transit (horse-drawn trolleys); Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker; businesses; conventions; disasters (fires); auto wrecks; police documents of murders and crimes; H. L. Hunt; and polio epidemic to name a few.
